Fernando Alonso will wear the McLaren team again to face the great challenge of the Indianapolis 500 , the title he lacks to complete the Triple Crown. This is the distinction that recognizes the winners of the Monte Carlo Grand Prix (Formula 1), the 24 Hours of Lemans (resistance) and the mythical test of the most famous oval in North America.

The Spanish has announced this Tuesday from New York, where he came to finish negotiating with the Arrow McLaren team, the binomial with which he will be in Indianapolis, on May 24. Although his last association with the English team, last year, ended up fatal, unable to qualify for the test, Alonso now returns in search of better fortune. If McLaren then partnered with Carlin, in 2020 he has sought more guarantees in Arrow, a brand with which he is completing every season of the Indy.

"I am a pilot and the Indy 500 is the biggest race in the world. I love the incredible fans that make it so special for all the drivers and I wanted to come back. I respect this race to the fullest and all those who participate in it, and all I want is to compete against them and do my best, as always, "said the Spaniard in the official team note.

"It was important for me to explore my options for this race, but Arrow McLaren SP has always been on top. I have a special relationship with McLaren; we have been through a lot together and that creates a bond, a loyalty that is strong," he adds. The Spaniard, 38 years old. In Formula 1, Alonso spent his last four seasons at the Woking-based team. Neither with Honda engine nor later with Renault, could you enjoy a competitive car.

He could shine at the Indy in 2018, when McLaren allowed him to run the test for the first time, by partnering with the Andretti team. Before the Honda engine of his car broke down (21 laps to go), he rolled to the front of the race.

In recent months, Alonso negotiated with the Andretti-Honda team its participation in the Indy 500 without finally reaching an agreement. It was speculated with a possible veto of the Japanese company to the Spanish, because of the criticism that poured into its engines. However, Michael Andretti himself has questioned this possibility.
