It was widely rumored that Henrik Lundqvist, who has not had much playing time in the New York Rangers lately, would switch clubs and the rumors intensified when Rangers called for a press conference. Former superstar Ilja Kovaltjuk left Montreal for the Washington Capitals and is in the process of becoming a "Russian colony" with Alexander Ovetjkin, Yevgeny Kuznetsov, Dimitrij Orlov and Ilja Samsonov. Montreal will receive a draft choice in the third round of 2020. Kovaltjuk is currently receiving salary from four NHL clubs.
Finnish Sami Vatanen leaves the New Jersey Devils for the Carolina Hurricanes where two of the stars are his compatriots Sebastian Aho and Teuvo Teräväinen.
