The international hockey association FIH has launched an investigation on Tuesday into hurtful texts by Dutch hockey player Renée van Laarhoven. The Kampong player called an Argentinian fan on Instagram "big troll".
The Argentinian woman, Carolina Pacheco, had placed a photo of herself on social media, on which she is holding a sign with the text: Sander, I want your shirt . That message was intended for Dutch international Sander de Wijn.
Van Laarhoven, the girlfriend of De Wijn, wanted to respond to the photo in a personal message to her friend. Instead, she accidentally sent her hurtful message to the Argentinian fan.
In her message, Van Laarhoven expresses a late opinion about the supporter, calling Pacheco "big troll". The woman shared the message on social media and it was picked up by the FIH, who has now submitted the matter to the independent integrity committee.
The Dutch hockey association KNHB also responded in a tweet to the blunder of Van Laarhoven. "The union and our national teams are distancing themselves from this message. They just love the atmosphere in Argentina and all Argentinian fans and look forward to playing many more games for that great audience."
The 22-year-old Van Laarhoven made his debut in Orange in November 2018 and has ten international games to her name. Her boyfriend De Wijn (29) is 145 times international.
