Denny Hamlin won two consecutive Daytona 500 victories on Monday after a race marked by a terrible accident in which veteran pilot Ryan Newman was seriously injured. Roush Fenway Racing's Ford Mustang led the last lap but skidded. It was struck by the car of Corey Lajoie (Go Fas Racing), thrown into the air and finished its race against the protective wall before igniting.

Several ambulances were dispatched to the track to support the driver at the end of the race. Black screens were erected around Newman's car while workers were extracting the driver from the wreckage. NASCAR executive vice-president Steve O'Donnell gave details of Newman's medical condition admitted to a city hospital.

"He is in serious condition, but the doctors said his injuries were not life-threatening," O'Donnell told reporters. Newman's competitors had already expressed concern about the driver's situation after the race. "I knew it was bad," said Hamlin, winner of the event. "We just wish him all the best," he added.
