• Awards: Laureus revolutionize everything to honor Spanish basketball
  • Album: The Laureus Red Carpet

One more year a constellation of soccer stars met this Monday in Berlin to deliver the Laureus Awards. Among the members of the Academy that awards the awards, Luis Figo , Carles Puyol and Alessandro del Piero (Conegliano, Italy, 1974), who attends with absolute peace of mind. Since his retirement in 2014, the Italian resides in Los Angeles and dedicates his time to his marketing company, Edge Americas, and the club he owns, LA 10, which is still taking its first steps. Despite his long career in Juventus, top scorer and player with the most disputed games in the history of the entity, Del Piero is now able to observe the current bianconeri with the distance that years and kilometers have given him.

How is your Juventus, winner of the Champions League in 1996, like the current Juventus? It is impossible to compare the two teams. And it's not because I don't want to do it, it's because it wouldn't be fair. Everything has changed. Soccer has changed. Even in its rules, with the VAR. Now everything is different, from the physical preparation of the players to the knowledge of the rival. In my opinion, my team was fantastic and Juventus now is too, that's for sure. Would they have won more Champions if they had had a player like Cristiano Ronaldo? [Laughs] Good question. She is funny. Of course, Cristiano would improve any team in history, but I played with extraordinary players and now I wouldn't trade them for anyone. We win what we earn and I am very happy with what we get. What was your Cristiano Ronaldo? That is, who was the best player of his time in Juventus? [Think for a while] You know ... my time in football was marked by the defenders. I would say that I played with the best defenses in history: Paolo Montero, Fabio Cannavaro ... and in the Italian national team, Paolo Maldini, Franco Baresi or Alessandro Nesta. It was what prevailed and, in fact, if I don't think of defense, the first thing that comes to mind are goalkeepers like Gianluigi Buffon. As for strikers, Trezeguet, Inzaghi, Vieri or Totti in the national team, but I think Zidane was superior in every way. After five seasons with Massimiliano Allegri as coach, this year Maurizio Sarri arrived on the Juventus bench and the result is still unknown. The team is a leader in Serie A with a point of advantage over Lazio, but it does not convince. Next week, in the knockout stages of the Champions League against Olympique de Lyon, he will have a litmus test. What does the team transmit to you? I think you have to wait to judge Sarri's work. Allegri did a very good job, won the five leagues he played and reached two Champions League finals [in 2015 and 2017], but you have to give Sarri time. There are many rumors around you and I think you have to let him train. He has been in office for six months and that is a very short time. What does it mean for you to be a member of the Laureus Awards Academy? It means a lot in several aspects. But I would highlight the responsibility for awarding the prizes and for helping the solidarity causes of which the Academy participates. Everything around the Awards is beautiful because we are many members of several different sports and we are united by the same thing. And finally, a prediction: Who will win the Champions League? Reflect again] I don't know. Maybe I could say it after the round of 16. The Champions League has stopped for two months, there are teams that have changed coaches, there are teams that have changed players, and it is difficult to make a prediction. Of course, Liverpool is the favorite: still playing in a magnificent way, it has a lot of margin in the Premier ... But in my opinion you also have to have Manchester City, Real Madrid and Juventus. For me, those are the four teams with more options to the title.
