The shock PSG-Lyon Sunday (9:00 p.m.) in Ligue 1 will be the first in France to use volumetric video capture technology, which enables action images to be broadcast on television from all angles and at eye level. players. The technology was presented Thursday at the Parc des Princes by the Professional Football League (LFP) and the American technology giant Intel which is already developing and using it in several football championships (Spain, England) as well as in NFL (football American) and NBA (basketball).

It allows, on an action, to stop on a fixed image, like a strike, a stop or a pass, and to show it from all angles, including from the eyes of a player, to better understand the trajectory of the ball or the positions on the lawn, with a rendering reminiscent of a video game.

"The idea is to be on the ground, to see what Neymar sees, what Mbappé sees," promised Howard Wright, Intel vice president of sports.

38 cameras installed above the stands

To do this, 38 cameras were installed in a circle above the stands of the Paris stadium, to capture each movement in high definition. The images - more than 200 terabytes per match, the equivalent of more than 23,000 DVDs - are then selected by a producer to be sent in the form of clips to the director of the meeting, who can integrate them into the TV broadcast of the match.

The device was tested at full size during the last PSG meeting at home, opposite Montpellier.

Its cost, "significant", is shared between the LFP and Intel, said the director of media rights of the League, Mathieu Ficot, without giving figures.

The objective is to "provide images and tools for our international broadcasters, thereby increasing the value of our rights", according to the director general of the LFP, Didier Quillot.

The technology, which will only concern Ligue 1 and the Parc des Princes initially, should be installed at the start of next season in the stadiums of Lyon and Marseille.
