Former Japanese national football team Keisuke Honda, who signed a contract with Brazilian First Division Botafogo, arrived at the airport in Rio de Janeiro, where the team is based, and received an enthusiastic welcome from more than 1,000 local supporters.

The 33-year-old Honda joined Vitesse in the Dutch partial league last November, but resigned in less than a month following the resignation of a coach who was in close contact with him. Revealed that he had signed a contract with Botafogo.

Honda, who once belonged to Italy's prestigious AC Milan and participated in the World Cup for three consecutive years as a representative from Japan, is one of the most famous Japanese soccer players in Brazil.

About four hours before Honda arrived, more than 1,000 dedicated supporters gathered at the airport, holding a banner saying "Welcome Honda" and waiting for the arrival with the Japanese flag in hand.

Excitement reached a climax when Honda appeared and waved to the gathered fans. Botafogo was down 15th out of 20 league teams in some domestic leagues last year, and one of the supporters who met him at the airport said with hope that Honda would save the team.

Honda will hold a press conference afterwards and greet supporters in front of his home stadium in Rio de Janeiro.
