Go Ahead Eagles has reached the quarterfinals of the TOTO KNVB Cup on Thursday. The team from Deventer was released in Spakenburg with a fright against the amateurs of IJsselmeervogels by winning the penalty series: 6-7.
After 120 minutes of play, 1-1 was written on the board. This is the first time since 2010 that Go Ahead has qualified for the quarter-finals of the national cup tournament. At the time, Ajax was too strong for the Eagles in the semi-finals.
Go Ahead, which previously eliminated Almere City and FC Twente, is the first Kitchen Champion Division club to qualify for the final eight. NAC Breda (against PSV) can also reach the quarterfinals later on Thursday. Jack de Gier's team plays at home against FC Utrecht for a place in the semi-finals.
Due to the loss of IJsselmeer birds, all amateur clubs are now out of the cup tournament. Spakenburg was already eliminated by Ajax on Wednesday (7-0).

Blood-curdling penalty series in Spakenburg
After a poor first half at Sportpark De Westmaat, IJsselmeervogels took the lead shortly after the break against Go Ahead Eagles. Robbert Olijfveld received the ball after a long pass, but luckily did not close: 1-0.
IJsselmeervogels held that margin for a long time, but ten minutes before the end the Keuken Kampioen Division-club came alongside. Gino Bosz shot the ball of about 25 meters over goalkeeper Brummel: 1-1.
No more goals were scored in regular time, although the home team had earned a penalty. Sanny Monteiro got down to the ground, but referee Christiaan Bax didn't see a penalty.
The extension also did not yield any more hits, so penalties had to make the decision. Both clubs already had one chance to win the series, but after eighteen penalties Go Ahead goalie Hobie Verhulst was the hero by first taking the penalty kick from Marciano Van Leijenhorst and then scoring himself.
