Sacred during the last African Cup of Nations, Algeria was rather preserved by the draw for the second phase of the qualifiers for the Africa zone for the 2022 World Cup, organized in Qatar. The Fennecs will face Burkina Faso, Niger and Djibouti there.

Seeded, the reigning African champion avoids certain dangerous adversaries, such as the Ivory Coast, fallen in group D with Cameroon, or South Africa, which will notably be opposed to Ghana in Pool G.

Another heavyweight of the continent, Senegal, carried by Sadio Mané, elected African player of the year 2019, will face the Congo, Namibia and Togo, while Egypt, and its flagship player Mohamed Salah, will have as competitors the Gabon, Libya and Angola.

A coat of arms to restore

Only the first of the ten groups advance to the third and final qualifying phase for the World Cup in November 2021. They will compete in play-offs and the five winners will qualify for Qatar.

For the first time since 1982, none of the five African teams selected has passed the elimination phase at the last World Cup in Russia.

The list of 40 African teams, divided into ten pools during a ceremony Tuesday evening in Cairo, consisted of the winners of the first round, whose matches took place last September, as well as the 26 African teams best ranked according to Fifa world ranking.

The second round matches will take place between March 2020 and October 2021.
