Neto, the defender of the Brazilian soccer team Chapecoense - the only survivor of the 2016 crash that caused the death of most of his team mates - has announced his retirement from football.

"My body cannot tolerate anymore. The pain is stronger than pleasure," the Brazilian defender told Globo Radio on Friday.

He said that he did not feel problems in his daily life, but that he suffered severe knee and back pain during extensive training with the team.

Neto, 34, is one of the six survivors of the plane accident that was taking the team to play the final match of the Copa Sud Americana in Medellin, where it crashed near the Colombian city in November 2016.

The deceased - 71 people - were mainly team players in addition to the coaches and journalists who accompanied the mission.

Neto had returned to football after a long period of rehabilitation.
