After the group stage, the 16 teams that will fight from February to be European champions are already known. There will only be five countries represented in the knockout phase , something that had never happened in the previous 16 editions of the Champions League under the current format. The four Spanish teams, the four English, three of the four Germans, three of the four Italians and two of the three French have been classified.

The drums

  • First group (in order, from A to H): PSG, Bayern Munich, Manchester City, Juventus, Liverpool, Barcelona, RB Leipzig and Valencia.
  • Seconds : Real Madrid, Tottenham, Atalanta, Atlético de Madrid, Naples, Borussia Dortmund, Olympique Lyon and Chelsea.

The draw will be subject to the usual conditions. The eight matches will be between a group second and a first, which will have the theoretical advantage of playing the decisive second leg in its stadium. Teams from the same country or those that have already done so in the group stage cannot face each other . These two particularities will disappear in the quarterfinals and semifinals, where anyone can face anyone.

The first leg of the round of 16 will be played on February 18, 19, 25 and 26 and the return matches on March 10, 11, 17 and 18 , at the rate of two games per night. The draw will be held next Monday (12.00 hours) in Nyon (Switzerland). These are the options of the Spanish teams:

Barcelona (1st of group F)

As with the other three Spanish teams, Valverde has five possible rivals for the round of 16. A priori, the most fearsome are the two English, Tottenham and Chelsea, which are also the most likely to cross the current LaLiga champion. A step below in terms of difficulty are Naples and Lyon, two teams currently in crisis. On paper, the simplest opponent for the Catalans would be the Atalanta.

Valencia (1st of group H)

The draw is slightly less scary than Barcelona. The Che set cannot be crossed with Chelsea and instead it can be done with Borussia Dortmund. Given the conditions of the draw, the German team is their most likely opponent with Tottenham de Mourinho. Like Barça, Valencia crosses his fingers so that his opponent is Atalanta or, as a lesser evil, Naples or Lyon.

Real Madrid (2nd group A)

The white team faces a raffle full of 'coconuts'. Among its five possible rivals are the current winners of the Champions (Liverpool), Premier League (Manchester City), Serie A (Juventus) and Bundesliga (Bayern), always with the game back home. The fifth in discord is Leipzig, a priori the most affordable, but not at all simple. With Timo Werner as a reference, the team owned by Red Bull is second in the German league to a point of the surprising Borussia Mönchengladbach and with six of advantage over Bayern.

Athletic (2nd of group D)

After achieving the classification on Wednesday, those of Simeone face a draw very similar to that of Real Madrid. The only difference is that they cannot cross Juventus (with whom they have shared a group) and they can do it with the PSG. Also as in the case of his neighbor, the fact that there are two other English teams as group seconds increases the chances of facing Liverpool or Manchester City.
