Dutch coach Bert van Marwijk has been sacked after a heavy 4-4 loss to Qatar and a first-round exit from the Gulf Cup in Doha, the UAE Football Federation (DFB) announced on Wednesday.

"The board of the United Arab Emirates Football Federation has decided to dismiss the services of Mr. Bert van Marwijk, coach of the national team," the federation said on its website.

"The Council thanked Mr. Marvik and his technical staff for the period in which he led Al Abyad, and the name of the coach who will be coaching the national team will be announced in the coming days."

Van Marwijk took over in March from Italy's Alberto Zaccheroni.

The UAE sacked Zaccheroni after ending her Asian Cup campaign at home in January with a 4-0 defeat to Qatar in the semi-finals.

Van Marwijk, 67, led the Netherlands to the 2010 World Cup final and led Saudi Arabia to the 2018 World Cup.
