La Liga president Javier Tibas announced his resignation on Sunday to give "more stability" to his league and called for new elections.

"I submit my resignation as president of the Spanish league, to open a new election process for the presidency," he said in his Twitter account. Tibas, 57, will run for a third term at the helm of LaLiga, after his first election in April 2013, before being re-elected in October 2016.

Tepas attached his resignation to a letter to the clubs, explaining his decision to "give as much stability as possible" to the institution. Elections for the presidency were scheduled for October 2020, but Tibas believes early elections will allow him to face future challenges with greater support and a four-year term.
