Liverpool has benefited with great difficulty from the loss of points of competitor Manchester City on Saturday. Thanks to two top goals from Virgil van Dijk, Brighton & Hove Albion was beaten 2-1. City came no further than 2-2 against Newcastle United.

The leader of the Orange team was twice accurate before the break from Trent Alexander-Arnold. Liverpool, with Georginio Wijnaldum in the team, therefore seemed to experience a simple afternoon.

However, Brighton came back fifteen minutes before the end of the game. Goalkeeper Alisson was sent out of the field after a handball with red, after which his replacement Adrián had no answer to the clever free kick by Lewis Dunk.

Liverpool was under full pressure in the final phase, but Adrián kept his goal clean with the necessary art and flight work in that phase. The 'Reds' are therefore two points ahead of Manchester City, which lost two points earlier on Saturday at Newcastle United: 2-2. The difference between the two teams is eleven points.

Willems contributes to City losing points

Jonjo Shelvey was responsible for the equalizer two minutes before the end. The Newcastle midfielder was completely free after a free kick and shot the ball from the edge of the penalty area hit.

Kevin De Bruyne had brought City to 1-2 just before. The Belgian shot a falling ball through the bottom of the crossbar hard, but did not grow into matchwinner due to the Shelvey goal.

Jetro Willems also spoke at Newcastle. The former PSV player took the equalizer halfway through the first half by hitting his lower right leg. He thereby canceled the opening goal of Raheem Sterling.

Mourinho wins again with 'Spurs'

José Mourinho has also won his third game as manager of Tottenham Hotspur. The Bournemouth of Nathan Aké was beaten 3-2. He made his debut last week with a competitive victory and also won in the Champions League.

Dele Alli scored twice, after which Moussa Sissoko took the third goal. Harry Wilson did something against the guests in the final phase. That last goal was given by Arnaut Danjuma Groeneveld. The 'Spurs' therefore come in provisional fifth place.

Number four Chelsea surprisingly lost 0-1 to West Ham United. Aaron Creswell scored the only goal. Patrick van Aanholt won 0-2 at Burnley with Crystal Palace, thanks to goals from Wilfried Zaha and Jeffrey Schlupp.
