Spain coach Luis Enrique has accused Robert Moreno, his former predecessor and former assistant, that he was not loyal.

Enrique justified his position at a news conference on Wednesday that Moreno wanted to continue to lead the Spanish team in the Euro 2008 "Euro 2020" alone and did not accept the return of Enrique.

Moreno was an assistant to Enrique as coach of the Spanish national team starting in July 2018, and took over the leadership of the team last March when Enrique had to resign to stay with his daughter, who later died of cancer.

Moreno led the Spanish team in six games, won four, drawn twice, and led Spain to qualify for Euro 2020.

"Robert Moreno was not loyal to me, I didn't want him by my side," Enrique said. "For me, excessive ambition is not an advantage, but a big drawback."

"He came to meet me at home and told me he wanted to lead the team at the 2020 European Championship, after which he confirmed he would be happy to work as an assistant again."

"I understand that he worked very hard to become a coach and that he has ambition but for me this is a betrayal, I can never do anything like this, and I don't want someone with such qualities in my device."

Moreno first worked for Luis Enrique in Barcelona's second team, then joined his coaching staff in Rome and Celta Vigo before returning to Barcelona. He last worked for him when he first took charge of Spain in July 2018.
