• 1-2 in Ceramics. Narration and statistics

Celta is becoming a nightmare for Villarreal in recent times. A triumph of the Galicians in the Ceramics Stadium caused the dismissal of Javi Calleja last season. Since then he had not won the celestial team outside of Balaidos, but he did it again on the same stage thanks to a double by Iago Aspas in the final stretch to raise doubts of the yellow team, which has only added a point in the four last days and see Europe increasingly further.

The effectiveness exhibited by Villarreal in the first days of the championship might not be normal. Neither is his lack of aim in recent games. The Calleja team is missing a middle ground between one thing and another, even if it is a matter of streaks. Because they are the same players now and then. Before the Celtic just introduced a small variation to place Chukwueze on the left wing, leaving Ekambi on top, with Gerard in his position and usual right wing. Playing on its natural side, the Nigerian wins center options but loses the shot. Even so, their incursions created the odd problem to the Galician defense, less nourished than in the Camp Nou.

In his premiere at the Celta bench, Oscar Garcia had used a line of five but at the Ceramics Stadium he used a 1-4-3-3, very Barça style. The differential factor of the beams is up and between Aspas, Brais, Sisto and Denis did not need too much to generate a few danger actions. Asenjo broke the clearest of the first half, a hand in hand with Sisto whose shot deflected just the goalkeeper.

Canceled offside

The Celtic arrived less but with more clarity and Aspas and Pape Cheikh had two balls in the mouth of goal that did not end up by centimeters. Villarreal dominated but without generating such clear occasions. He had them, in any case, to get ahead, almost all in Gerard's head or feet. The Catalan striker was shot for a span from the front after a ball that Aidoo lost. For a very short time he also left a stub in a corner kick. And the one who ended up on the net, after a foul thrown by Cazorla, was well invalidated for offside.

Seen the panorama it was no surprise that Celta was ahead in the resumption after another good action by Denis Suarez, the great supplier of balls for the celestial attackers. The beneficiary this time was Sisto, who dribbled Peña and beat Asenjo even though the goalkeeper got to slightly deflect with his feet.

Villarreal's response was immediate and just five minutes later he had returned the boards to the scoreboard, after a good collective action in which he moved the ball from side to side to end a Quintillà pass from the baseline that Chukwueze finished off, to whom Calleja had returned to his usual band after the break.

More comfortable on the carousel

Neither team wanted to settle for the tie. It was not worth the Villarreal, who with the departure of Moi Gómez put practically a line of four above and had a couple of approaches after the goal, like a shot of Gerard that crashed on the outside of the post. He also wanted more Celtic, as his coach showed by putting Santi Mina into play. The Vigo team arrived more fully in the last quarter, had more chances and ended up finding their reward in their most decisive player.

Before Aspas decided the game, Asenjo had to be employed before the attempts of Sisto, Denis and Mina. The Villarreal had his in a header from Gerard who left for very little when the meeting had already become a round trip but it was the Celta who found himself more comfortable in the carousel. Aspas ahead of the Galicians with a shot on the second post between Peña and the post ended up in the net.

Villarreal spent his last cartridge, which appeared perhaps too late but had time to send a ball to the crossbar. With the yellows already overturned, Aspas hunted a counter and fiddled with Asenjo and the defense before ending the match and raising doubts of the Calleja team.
