Romania will face Iceland in the European Championship play-offs and possibly the winner of the Bulgaria-Hungary match. That was revealed by the draw in Nyon on Friday.
The semi-finals of the play-offs will take place on March 26 and on March 31 the finals of the tournament are scheduled.
The winner of the play-offs between Romania, Iceland, Bulgaria and Hungary will possibly play against the Dutch in the group stage of 2020. In group C, Amsterdam and Bucharest are the playing cities.
Because the Hungarian capital Budapest is a group F playing city, it may also be that the winner of the play-offs of Division A ends up in the group of Germany.
The draw for the group phase takes place on November 30, - before the outcome of the play-offs - so that it is only after the play-offs that it is clear which country will be in the Orange squad. UEFA wants all participating countries to play at home.
Schedule play-offs EK 2020
- Division A: Iceland-Romania and Bulgaria-Hungary
- Division B: Bosnia and Herzegovina, Northern Ireland and Slovakia, Ireland
- Division C: Scotland-Israel and Norway-Serbia
- Division D: Georgia-Belarus and North-Macedonia-Kosovo.
Israel by draw classified in play-offs Division C
When the play-offs were drawn, only countries in Division A and Division C had to be placed, with Divisions B and D the four participating countries were already established after the Nations League and the European Championship qualification.
Israel was designated by the draw as an opponent of Scotland in Path C , in which countries from Division C of the Nations League play.
For the other teams from Division C (Romania, Hungary and Bulgaria) there was no place in Path C, so they ended up in Path A with Iceland.
The draw for the group stage of the European Championship will take place on Saturday, November 30 in Bucharest. It is already certain that the Dutch team will join Group C in Ukraine. The Netherlands will play the three group matches in the Johan Cruijff ArenA.
