Mathieu van der Poel was named best Dutch cyclist of the year on Wednesday. The winner of the Amstel Gold Race received the Gerrit Schulte Trophy at the Cycling Gala in Den Bosch.

Van der Poel booked thirteen victories on the road this year, with the Amstel Gold Race being his most impressive. He became the first Dutch Gold Race winner in a spectacular final in April since Erik Dekker in 2001.

Van der Poel also became both European and cyclocross world champion. He also won the European title on mountain bike.
