Tottenham have sacked coach Mauricio Pochettino after a string of poor results, the Premier League club said on Tuesday.

"We were very reluctant to make this change," said club president Daniel Levy.

The sacking followed weeks of controversy over the club's decline since losing in the Champions League final to Liverpool in June.

Pochettino, 47, joined Tottenham in 2014 and led him to the top of the Premier League, but his results during the season have fallen and he has not managed to win in his last game.

According to press reports, Jose Mourinho is considered the most prominent candidate to succeed Pochettino, and confirmed that the Portuguese coach rejected other offers in the last period pending the arrival of an offer from Daniel Levy.
