Sanne Vermeer will most likely miss the Olympic Games in Tokyo. The 21-year-old judoka has sustained a severe hamstring injury and is on the sidelines for six to nine months.
Vermeer, who comes in the class up to 63 kilograms, sustained the injury last weekend during a Europa League meeting in Lisbon. On Monday the severity of the injury came to light.
The Friezin was involved with Juul Franssen in the battle for the only Olympic ticket in the class up to 63 kilograms. Earlier this year, Franssen in the battle for bronze at the World Cup was still too strong for Vermeer, who won European Championship bronze a few months earlier.
"It is difficult to comprehend what happened", says Vermeer on the judo union website on Tuesday. "This year has been super good so far. In one fell swoop that will end prematurely."
Vermeer, winner of the Grand Prix of Zagreb this year, is now doing everything in his power to get fit as quickly as possible. "The only thing I can do now is fully focus on my rehabilitation and come back even stronger."
