Manchester City winger Raheem Sterling has been left out of the squad for next week's Euro 2020 qualifiers at Wembley after a brawl at the training camp on Monday, the FA said.

The Daily Mail said Sterling had a clash with Liverpool defender Joe Gomez after the England squad gathered at the Burton on Trent training center on Monday, less than 24 hours after City lost 3-1 to Liverpool.

"Sterling tried to grab Gomez from his neck after arriving in an area reserved for the players," the paper said. The final minutes of the clash at Anfield in the Premier League on Sunday saw a friction between the two after Gomez came on as a substitute.

The FA statement, which said Sterling would stay with the team, did not specify the nature of the fight or confirm whether Gomez was the other side, but England coach Gareth Southgate linked the incident to Sunday's Premier League clash.

"We made the decision to exclude Raheem from Thursday's game in Montenegro," Southgate said.

"I feel that the appropriate action for the team is the decision we have taken.

Sterling has become a central player in the 'Three Lions' team over the past year following criticism of his form at the 2018 World Cup.

Last season, he won the Footballer of the Year award from the Football Writers Association after scoring 25 goals in all competitions, winning City's Premier League, FA Cup and League Cup.

With England, the 25-year-old has scored 12 goals in 55 caps, but became a regular under Southgate and scored twice in a 6-0 home win over Bulgaria last month.

England are top of Group A and will ensure a place in the finals if they draw with Montenegro. They meet away to Kosovo in their next qualifier on Sunday, which could see Sterling return.
