The world of boxing is in mourning after the death of the 27-year-old and middleweight Australian boxer Dwight Ritchie , who collapsed lifeless during training. The Sydney Daily Telegraph newspaper pointed out that Ritchie was hit in the body while sparring for fellow countryman Michael Zerafa , who was preparing to face Jeff Horn , a former welterweight champion.

According to this newspaper, Ritchie was able to go back to his corner of the ring and then collapsed. Despite efforts to revive him, the fighter could not survive. Ritchie's promoter, Jake Ellis , confirmed the news on the Facebook network. "With great sadness I must announce that ' Fighting Cowboy ' (Diving Fighter) Dwight Ritchie has passed away doing what he loved most," he said. "As a promoter and friend of Dwight it is unbearable to accept this tragic news," he added.

He beat cancer twice

Ritchie had a balance of 19 wins and two losses as a professional. In his last fight, held in August, he had unanimously lost to Australian Tim Timzyu , for the IBF's Australian crown in the super welterweight category. The deceased boxer had three children and had overcome cancer twice, with six months of life and a year later.

On the social network Instagram, Tszyu said he felt "truly sad with the death of Dwight Ritchie. Only the boxers understand the bond that unites them, especially those with whom the ring is shared. Rest in peace, champion."

Fourth death of the year

Ritchie's death occurred less than a month after the American Patrick Day died as a result of a brain injury after his defeat by KO against Charles Conwell, in Chicago.

The Argentine Hugo Santillán died in July after a fight in the city of San Nicolás, north of Buenos Aires, just two days after the Russian Maxim Dadashev died due to injuries suffered in a fight in Maryland, United States.
