Lewis Hamilton (Mercedes) won the 2019 Formula 1 World Championship on Sunday, November 3, finishing second in the US Grand Prix. Although there are still two Grands Prix this season, the Briton can no longer be ranked. From now on, only German Michael Schumacher still ahead of him in the number of victories and world titles.

The title narrowly escaped him last week, October 27, in Mexico. Winner of the Grand Prix at Autodrome Hermanos Rodriguez in Mexico City, Lewis Hamilton could not be crowned on Central American soil because of the third place taken by Finland's Valtteri Bottas, his teammate at Mercedes. The Grail, however, did not escape Sunday, November 3 further north.

A second place in the United States stands for title

Starting in fifth place in the US Grand Prix, Lewis Hamilton did not win on the Texas track. It was Valterri Bottas, on pole, who waved the checkered flag. His British teammate finally took second place. A result sufficient to put an end to the suspense: although there are still two races to be played in this season 2019 (in Brazil on November 17, then in Abu Dhabi on December 1), the title is acquired for Lewis Hamilton, who has won ten of nineteen Grand Prix contests. He has been missing the podium only three times this season.

" I can not believe it. Thank you very much. I am upset. It was a very difficult race today, "said the world champion after the race. Hamilton still slipped "he hoped to win " in Elroy, a suburb of Austin, but could not do it because of his tires. The spirit of winning, always.

At two Grand Prix of the curtain, Lewis Hamilton has 381 points, against 314 for Valtteri Bottas and 249 for Monaco's Charles Leclerc (Ferrari).

Schumacher records in his sights

World champion in 2017 and 2018, Lewis Hamilton is the first driver to make the pass of three since Sebastian Vettel, who has lined up four titles between 2010 and 2013. A closer look, only another German, Nico Rosberg , broke the hegemony of the British between 2016. For this exception, the Stevenage native crushes F1 with five titles over the last six years.

With his very first title in 2008, while at McLaren, Lewis Hamilton, 34, now has six world championship titles. Here he is now over a legend, the Argentine Juan Manuel Fangio , five-time world champion in the 1950s at Alfa Romeo, Maserati, Mercedes and Ferrari.

Only one man still dominates Lewis Hamilton at the top of the Formula 1: Michael Schumacher, record holder of victories (91 against 83 for the British) and seven-time world champion between 1994 and 2004 with Benetton and Ferrari . With Hamilton averaging 10 victories per season since 2014, Schumi - retired since 2012 and severely handicapped since a ski accident in 2013 - will no doubt see his place at the threatened summit next season.
