The Italian-American Fiat Chrysler and the French group PSA, manufacturer of Peugeot, confirmed today in a joint note that "they plan to join forces" to become the fourth car company in the world with synergies estimated at 3.7 billion euros and without closing factories.

The statement explains that this ongoing dialogue opens "the way to the creation of a new group of global dimensions and resources, maintained at 50% by the shareholders of PSA and by 50% of those of FCA.

This new merger project comes after Fiat a few months ago presented an offer to combine with its rival, Renault, which failed due to lack of support from the French government and its Nissan partner.
