LONDON (Reuters) - Leicester City set a new record with a nine-goal win over Southampton on Friday in the opening of the Premier League's 10th round of matches.

Leicester City became the highest-placed win in the history of the competition, breaking the previous record for Manchester United, who beat Nottingham Forest 8-1 in February 1999.

The victory of the "foxes" to become the highest victory in the history of the competition since the launch of the new system of the English Premier League season 1993-1992.

With this win, Leicester equaled the Red Devils record when they beat Ipswich Town in 1995 with the same result.

Spaniard Ayuzi Perez took the lead and scored three goals (19, 39 and 57), as did teammate Jimmy Vardi who scored a hat-trick (the last minute of the first half, 58 and the fourth minute of stoppage time).

The rest of the game came through a defender between Shelwell (10) and Belgian Yuri Telemans (17) and James Madison (85).

Lester became the second team in Premier League history to score two hat-tricks in a single game after Arsenal in May 2003, and it is also against Southampton.

Elsewhere, Perez became the first player in Premier League history to score a hat-trick in the same opponent's jersey with two different teams (Leicester and Newcastle) since Luis Suárez in 2012.

Leicester City have 20 points in second place, waiting for the rest of the matches, while Southampton are eight points behind in 18th.
