Kiki Bertens plays in the semi-finals of the WTA Elite Trophy against the Chinese Zheng Saisai, as the draw revealed on Friday.
The 27-year-old Bertens played once before against the two-year-younger Zheng. In 2016, the Dutch won in the first round of the WTA tournament in Miami 6-3 and 6-2. Bertens is currently the number ten in the world, Zheng is 40th on the WTA ranking.
The other half final battle in Zhuhai is between the Belarusian Aryna Sabalenka and Karolína Muchová from the Czech Republic. The semi-finals are scheduled for Saturday and the final race will be finished on Sunday.
Bertens reached the semi-finals on Thursday by finishing first in her group. Earlier this week, De Wateringse beat the Ukrainian Dayana Yastremska (6-4 and 6-3) and the Croatian Donna Vekic (7-6 (5) and 6-2).
The Elite Trophy, the end-of-year tournament for the players in the sub-top of the WTA ranking, was won by Ashleigh Barty last year. The Australian is taking part in the WTA Finals next week and cannot defend her title.
Bertens took part in the prestigious WTA Finals last year, but was unable to qualify this year. The leader of Dutch tennis will travel to Shenzhen next week as a reserve player in the hope that someone will cancel.
