Belgian Olympic champion Maric Fairfort ended her life with a lethal injection of so-called "euthanasia" after suffering from a terminal illness that caused her chronic pain.

The 400-meter gold medalist at the 2012 Paralympic Games in London was paralyzed, but her health began to deteriorate since 2017 when she began to have convulsions and lost her eyesight and could not sleep because of chronic pain.

Fairfort, 40, asked doctors to end her life with a lethal injection (permitted by Belgian law since 2002 on the recommendation of three doctors), after she stopped receiving treatment altogether.

Fairfort announced her choice - via her official Instagram account - by saying that this is the finish line (the end of her life), and that she does not want to suffer again as her body screams in pain.
