Sifan Hassan is still in the race for the title European athlete of the year. The Dutch was already among the ten nominees and is also one of the last four contenders to be announced on Monday evening.

The 26-year-old Hassan has had a very strong season, in which she took historic World Cup gold at the 1,500 meters and 10,000 meters. She also won the 1,500 meters and 5,000 meters at the Diamond League.

Furthermore, the born Ethiopian improved the world record on the English mile (1,609 meters) and ran a European record on the 1,500 meters, 3,000 meters and 5,000 meters.

In the battle for the European Athlete of the Year title, Hassan has competition from Dina Asher-Smith (world champion in 200 meters and silver in 100 meters), Mariya Lasitskene (world champion high jump) and Malaika Mihambo (world champion long jump).

The prize for the best European athlete of the year is awarded on Saturday and has been in existence since 1993. In 2014 and 2015 the title went to Dafne Schippers and last year Asher-Smith received the trophy.

Hassan is also still in the race for the prize for world athlete of the year. The trophy will be awarded on November 23.
