WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Patrick Day, 27, died in Chicago from a head injury in a 10th round knockout defeat by Charles Conwell in Saturday's middleweight fight.

Dai was in a coma for four days after being beaten by a knockout in a fight on Saturday, and despite emergency brain surgery, doctors failed to save him.

"Patrick died four days after receiving a brain injury during Saturday's fight," said Le Debella, promoter of the American boxer "Day", in remarks to international television networks.

"Dai was surrounded by his family and close friends. On behalf of the Patrick family, his team and all those close to him, we are grateful for your prayers, your support and your love for Patrick, who has been clear since his injury."

Le D'Bella stressed that it is very difficult to explain or justify the dangers of boxing at this time and that he will not make any statements.

American Dai was a boxing professional in 2013.He became a leading middleweight competitor and won the WBAA in 2017, which was followed by the International Boxing Federation in 2019.
