Wim Stroetinga took the bronze medal on Thursday at the non-Olympic event scratch at the European Championship track cycling in Apeldoorn.
After sixty laps on the track in Omnisport, 34-year-old Fries had to tolerate only Spaniard Sebastian Mora Vedri (gold) and Greek Christos Volikakis (silver).
Stroetinga was also third on the scratch at the 2016 European Championships in Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines and that place also won him the scratch at the 2012 World Championships in Melbourne.
The routnier gave the Netherlands the third medal at this European Championship, after the gold of the team sprinters and the bronze of the team sprinters Wednesday on the opening day of the tournament.
Hoogland and Lavreysen convincingly in the eighth final sprint
Jeffrey Hoogland and Harrie Lavreysen qualified convincingly for the eighth finals in the sprint earlier on Thursday.
Hoogland and Lavreysen kept all other participants in the qualification. Title holder Hoogland rode the best time over 9 meters with 9,474, followed by world champion Lavreysen with 9,510.
On Thursday evenings, the quarterfinals and the resits in this section will also be finished.
Braspennincx also to eighth finals
Among the women, Shanne Braspennincx reached the eighth finals in the sprint. She was satisfied with the seventh time (10.912).
Laurine van Riessen ended up in 13th place (11,125). She has to push through an intermediate round for the eighth finals.
The German top talent Lea Sophie Friedrich, who is busy with her senior debut season, rode the best time in qualifying: 10.724.
