Fernando Gaviria won the first stage of the Tour of Guangxi on Thursday. The Colombian sprinter of UAE Team Emirates registered its fifth victory of the season.
The 25-year-old Gaviria settled in Beihai in a flat ride over more than 135 kilometers with Pascal Ackermann from BORA-hansgrohe, who finished second. Matteo Trentin (Mitchelton-SCOTT) crossed the line in third place.
The Tour of Guangxi is the last WorldTour race of the season. Last year Dylan Groenewegen won the first stage on behalf of Jumbo-Visma, there was twice day success for Fabio Jakobsen (Deceuninck-Quick-Step) and the final victory in China went to the Italian Gianni Moscon of Team INEOS.
Groenewegen and Jakobsen are not participating this year. Jumbo-Visma is present with a five-member team, consisting of Dutchmen Bert-Jan Lindeman, Timo Roosen, Antwan Tolhoek and Taco van der Hoorn and the Belgian Floris De Tier.
The Chinese cycling race continues on Friday with another flat stage, in which the peloton covers more than 152 kilometers between Beihai and Qinzhou. The Tour of Guangxi ends Tuesday.
