American junior middleweight boxer Patrick Day, who suffered a loss by KO in the tenth round on Saturday night, died Wednesday of brain injuries at Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago.

Day was shot down in the fourth and eighth rounds by undefeated Charles Conwell, the 2016 US Olympic boxer, during the 10-round fight at the "Wintrust Arena."

Conwell clearly won the fight and Day was competitive, but in the tenth round Conwell hit two rights and a left hook that knocked out Day.

At the time Day fell, the back of his head crashed into the canvas, and referee Celestino Ruiz immediately stopped the fight without initiating the protection account, when he registered 1:46 minutes of that assault.

Day was immediately attended by medical staff, was removed from the ring on a stretcher and then by ambulance. The fighter never regained consciousness, then convulsed and went into a coma before undergoing emergency brain surgery. This Wednesday, surrounded by his parents, and other members of his family, Day was disconnected from the machines that kept him alive.

Two days before Conwell published a letter to Day on social media . "I never wanted this to happen to you. All I wanted to do was win. If I could go back to the past I would do it. Nobody deserves this to happen," he said. "I repeat the fight over and over in my head thinking why this happened and why it happened to you," he added.

"I can't stop thinking about you. I prayed for you many times and shed so many tears because I couldn't even imagine how your family and your friends would feel. I see you everywhere I go and everything I hear is wonderful things about you." he concluded.

Day (17-4-1, six knockouts ), from Freeport (New York), entered the fight after losing a 10-round decision against Carlos Adames on June 28.

Before the consecutive losses, Day had won six fights in a row since 2015 and was a leading fan.
