Eddy Merckx is in the hospital after a fall on Sunday with his bike. The 74-year-old five-time Tour de France winner has a major head wound.
Merckx fell during a bike ride with friends. He was rushed to the hospital in Dendermonde, Belgium.
Because the Belgian has a pacemaker, the doctors do not want to take any risks and will be examined further on Monday. It is unclear when Merckx can leave the hospital.
Fifty years ago Merckx won the Tour for the first and partly because of that anniversary the Grand Départ was in Brussels this year. He was of course also present in the Belgian capital.
Merckx shares record with Anquetil, Hinault and Indurain
Except in 1969, Merckx, who is seen as one of the best cyclists of all time, won the Tour in 1970, 1971, 1972 and 1974. He shares the record of five final victories with Jacques Anquetil, Bernard Hinault and Miguel Indurain. Merckx has also won the record number of stage wins (34) in the Tour.
Merckx also won the Giro d'Italia (1968, 1970, 1972, 1973 and 1974) five times and in 1973 he was the strongest in the Vuelta a España.
