Earlier this year, the International Athletic Association (IAAF) introduced a new world ranking. The ranking will above all be the basis for those who are allowed to participate in the World Cup and the Olympic Games, and thus is of great importance.

But it has been widely criticized from many profiles, partly because different competitions have been scored in different ways. For example, Diamond League competitions give significantly more points than "regular" GP competitions, which means that athletes who are not invited do not get the chance to take the highest points.

Weak gold result

One who now gets to experience how the rankings can beat is the newly created world champion Daniel Ståhl.

Although he took World Cup gold two weeks ago, he collapsed when the new world ranking was presented last week, from place four to place ten, something that Aftonbladet reported earlier.

The reason is that his victory result was, for him moderate, 67.59. In several other branches, for example 100 meters, the victory result was much better which made the winner there (Christian Coleman) rushed from place 18 to place 3.

- It is an extremely unfair system, says Swedish Athletics Association statistics manager A Lennart Julin to SVT Sport.

- The ranking is really strange. There were a number that made very good results now at the World Cup that were not even ranked before the World Cup because they did not have enough competitions. It could be injuries and other things that made them not compete, and then they are not even in the rankings, despite knowing that they are among the best in the world.

"Bizarre effects"

Julin questions, among other things, how IAAF has chosen to score different competitions.

- Not all branches of a gala are equally good. Say we have a GP competition in Sweden with Ståhl, Simon Pettersson and Fedrick Dacres, then it is a fantastic competition. But in female three-stage we have no good Swedes, then the competition will not be on the same level. But still, there are as many bonus points, he says, and continues:

- And that's the bonus of a national championship. To take SM gold in the discus is very difficult. It may not be as difficult as 3000 meters of obstacles.

- Then these are the bizarre effects.
