Highest tide in the history of observations

With the approach of Typhoon No. 19, there are places where the tide level of the sea has risen by more than 1 meter along the coast of Kanto and Tokai.

The place of the highest tide in observation history

Especially in Omaezaki and Irozaki in Shizuoka Prefecture, and Odawara City in Kanagawa Prefecture, the highest tide level was observed by 5:00 pm on the 12th.

Also, at 5 pm, the tide level in Tokyo Bay, such as Tokyo Port and Yokohama Port, is more than 50 centimeters higher than usual, and it may become higher in the future.

High tide + high waves in Tokyo Bay ...

Risks are further increased when high waves rush to where the tide level rises due to storm surges, and the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism says that there is a risk of flooding in Tokyo Bay.

Beware of the river as well as the coast

It is not only the coastal areas that should be noted.

When a storm surge occurs, the water level near the estuary rises, making it difficult for the river water to flow, further increasing the risk of flooding.

If you are near a river where the risk of flooding is high, ensure safety by evacuating.

Risk of damage even at low tide

The high tide time of Kanto and Tokai on the 12th is from 4 pm to 6 pm, but Typhoon No. 19 approaches with a very strong force, so the risk of damage from storm surges is not limited to the high tide time.

The Japan Meteorological Agency says, “If a typhoon approaches and a very strong wind blows, even if it is low tide, there is a risk of a large rise in the tide level.
