Kenyan Eliud Kipchoji became the first runner to break a marathon in less than two hours. The Vienna Marathon on Saturday clocked one hour 59 minutes 40 seconds.

The Olympic champion and world record holder in the marathon completed the course of the 42-km race in one hour and 59.40 minutes amid fog in the Austrian capital.

Kipchoji scored an average of 2.50 minutes per kilometer and reached the center line after 59.35 minutes.

The IAAF said it would not officially recognize the figure because it had been won in an open competition, although IAAF president Sebastian Coe welcomed the attempt to break the figure.

It was the second attempt by the Kenyan runner to break the two-hour barrier after losing the first attempt by 26 seconds in Monza two years ago, and the figure was also not recognized by the International Federation.

Kipchoji said earlier that a record of less than two hours was like climbing to the moon.

Kipchoji, the 2016 Rio Olympics champion, holds the official world marathon time record and achieved the Berlin marathon in 2018 when he clocked two hours, one minute and 39 seconds.
