Sifan Hassan has a chance to win the European Athlete of the Year title. The Dutch woman is one of ten women who were nominated for the prestigious prize on Friday.
The 26-year-old Hassan had a great season, in which she recently won historic World Cup gold at the 1,500 meters and 10,000 meters. She also won the 1,500 meters and 5,000 meters at the Diamond League.
Furthermore, the born Ethiopian improved the world record on the English mile (1,609 meters) and ran a European record on the 1,500 meters, 3,000 meters and 5,000 meters.
Alongside Hassan, the British Dina Asher-Smith (world champion in the 200 meters and silver in the 100 meters) and the German Konstanze Klosterhalfen (bronze in the 5,000 meters in the World Cup) are on the shortlist.
In addition, Anzhelika Sidorova (pole vault), Malaika Mihambo (long jump), Mariya Lasitskene (high jump), Gesa Felicitas Krause (steeplechase), Katarina Johnson-Thompson (all-around camp), Joanna Fiodorow (bullet hurling) and Eleonora Giorgi (quick walk) have been nominated.
The prize for the best European athlete of the year has been awarded since 1993. In 2014 and 2015 the title went to Dafne Schippers and last year Asher-Smith received the trophy.
