Charlotte Kalla, Stina Nilsson and most recently Frida Karlsson. In recent years, that audience has been able to take part in many long-term successes on the women's side. The men's success, on the other hand, has been wanting with his absence since Johan Olsson took the World Cup gold in Falun.

The Swedish Ski Association now wants to remedy this. In order to promote Swedish cross-country skiing in general and Swedish riders in particular, the Ski Association together with company sponsorship will now go in with SEK 3-4 million to develop skiers just below the national team level. The model is not completely different from the one Norway has had for several years.

- So far we have spent a lot of money on national teams, now want to invest money both regionally and locally on skiers who knock on the door to national team, says Ola Strömberg, associate director of the Swedish Ski Association to SVT Sport.

"We need to increase the proportion of coaches at home"

The investment comes after an investigation by the Ski Federation to investigate the reasons for the missing men's successes.

- We saw parts that we really lack in talent development. On the one hand, there is too little alternative for young people and young adults to exercise at a high level in the home environment. We need to increase the proportion of coaches at home and we also need to invest in places where they live a lot of people and there is ski culture, says Ola Strömberg to SVT Sport.

However, Strömberg believes that the investment is not just directed at the riders.

- It is a commitment to total sports in sports regardless of gender. These are problems that all Swedish riders have encountered. But the skiers have succeeded, despite the fact that we have had these challenges in Swedish skiing.
