Moroccan star Mehdi Benatia announced his retirement from international football with the Atlas Lions in a surprise decision for Moroccan fans.

The former Qatar captain and Al Duhail player revealed his decision in an interview with BN Sport, two days before Morocco coach Vahid Halilozic announced the list of players involved in the friendly against Libya and Gabon on October 11 and 15.

Mehdi Benatia has made 60 caps for Morocco since his debut against Cameroon in 2008.

He played for a number of top European clubs, including Juventus and Roma in Italy and Bayern Munich in Germany, before moving to Qatar in January.
