Mathieu's biggest competitors
Today, Mathieu van der Poel will probably pay most attention to men like Julian Alaphillipe and Peter Sagan , riders who have often proved that they have a strong final shot in the legs after a tough course. But flat names also like Greg van Avermaet, Phillipe Gilbert, Michael Matthews and Alejandro Valverde. And who knows, maybe super talent Remco Evenepoel can show something beautiful.

Moerenhout has put together a strong and experienced team around Van der Poel, including men such as Bauke Mollema, Dylan van Baarle and Niki Terpstra. "It is special and logical at the same time that these types of riders want to ride for Mathieu. The boys also know that Mathieu is outstanding in this area and is naturally a finisher." [3/3]

Van der Poel made a great impression this season with ten victories in 26 race days, culminating in the Amstel Gold Race. Moerenhout contacted him early in the spring. "Not to persuade Mathieu to drive the World Cup on the road, but to present him the facts. I gave him the confidence that he would be the leader."

National coach guards euphoria around Van der Poel
The expectations around Mathieu van der Poel for the road race at the World Cup are sky high, but coach Koos Moerenhout emphasizes that the first Dutch world title for men in 34 years is still a fact. "As a team we should not go along with the euphoria around Mathieu. It is motivating to be at the start with a top favorite, but it will be a tough course." [1/3]
