UEFA's perfect squad for the first round of the group stage of the continent's Champions League has been overshadowed by surprises.

Barcelona's Lionel Messi, Juventus Cristiano Ronaldo and Liverpool striker Mohamed Salah have all been left out of the squad for failing to perform, while they have seen new faces.

Andre Ter Stegen (Barcelona) was selected for the goalkeeper, and in the line of defense: Kiran Tripier (Atletico Madrid), Mats Hummels (Borussia Dortmund), Joel Feltman (Ajax Amsterdam), and Nicolas Tagliavico (Ajax Amsterdam).

In the midfield: Edson Alvarez (Ajax Amsterdam), Thiago Alcantara (Bayern Munich), Angel Di Maria (Paris Saint-Germain), and Myslav Orchic (Dinamo Zagreb).

Hwang Hee Chan and Prout Holland were the surprise attackers.
