Quincy Promes hopes that with Ajax he can approach the success in last year's Champions League. Participation in the most important European club tournament is one of the reasons why the attacker signed in Amsterdam this summer.
The 27-year-old Promes is looking forward to the Champions League anthem alone. "The chorus, the atmosphere in the stadium, everything is beautiful. You want to be here as a footballer," he says in the run-up to the home game with Lille OSC on Tuesday.
"For me, the Champions League was also an important reason to return here. I saw all European matches last season. Real humiliated, Juventus knocked out and not getting enough against the Spurs. They know Ajax again in Europe. Hopefully we will come to Europe again so far again. "
Promes, who in the past as a ball boy already played Ajax Champions League matches in the Johan Cruijff ArenA, had his best years as a player of Spartak Moscow. In Russia he scored 66 goals and 34 assists in 135 duels.
Last year he signed with Sevilla, but in La Liga he did not come to his best game. The Amsterdammer decided this summer to sign a five-year contract with Ajax.

"Want to be that successful Spartak footballer again"
Many people did not understand his return to the Netherlands, Promes noticed. "But those people also thought it was always cold in Russia. And they also criticized me, while they never saw me playing at Spartak," he says.
"I want to be that successful footballer at Spartak again at Ajax. I want to become a champion, get far into the Champions League, deliver a lot of assists and score very often. Here at Ajax I can also play in my best positions, behind the striker or as left winger. Here I am happy and happy. "
For the time being, the Orange International usually has to do with a spare role, because players like Hakim Ziyech, Donny van de Beek and David Neres stayed with Ajax this summer. "That makes sense, because they did a fantastic job last year," said Promes.
"Of course I am happy that Hakim, Donny and Neres have stayed. That makes Ajax stronger. I think we can all play together, but that is up to the trainer. In the end, I set myself up. You can't play a good Promes on the couch."
The match between Ajax and Lille in the Johan Cruijff ArenA starts on Tuesday at 9 p.m. Chelsea and Valencia are the other two opponents in Group H of the Champions League.
