Wilco Kelderman and Nairo Quintana did good business on Wednesday in the classification of the Vuelta a España. The two were in the spectacular and chaotic seventeenth stage in a large leading group that took more than five minutes on a group with leader Primoz Roglic. Philippe Gilbert won the stage.
Especially due to the wind it was all day in the Tour of Spain. Jumbo-Visma had to chase, but leader Roglic's team could not limit the difference with the Kelderman group.
The Slovenian red jersey carrier lost 5 minutes and 27 seconds to Kelderman and 5.19 to Quintana. The Colombian from Movistar climbed four places in the rankings and is now second, at 2.24 from Roglic. His teammate Alejandro Valverde is number three at 2.48, ahead of Tadej Pogacar (+3.42) and Miguel Ángel López (+3.59).
Kelderman rose from eighth to sixth place in the general ranking. The 28-year-old Dutchman has to make up for 5 minutes and 5 seconds on Roglic.
In the battle for the daily victory, Gilbert dealt with Sam Bennett in the streets of finishing place Guadalajara, who started the sprint too early and stopped. Rémi Cavagna, Dylan Teuns and Kelderman completed the top five. The 37-year-old Gilbert, who had four teammates in the leading group in the final, also won this Vuelta in the twelfth stage.
The Tour of Spain continues on Thursday with a mountain stage of 177.5 kilometers from Colmenar Viejo to Becerril de la Sierra. On the way the riders have to cross four cols of the first category.
