Suspended sentence
Turkish footballer Arda Turan was found guilty of shooting with firearms, which led to panic in a public place, illegal possession of weapons and deliberate mutilation. In total, he was sentenced to eight years, two months and 15 days in prison.
The incident occurred in October 2018. The football player of Barcelona, acting on loan for Istanbul Bashaksehir, came to one of the nightclubs in the Turkish capital, where he met Ozlem Adu Shahin. There he began to flirt with her, while making obscene hints. However, the woman was her husband, the famous Turkish singer Berkai Shahin. Upon learning of the incident, he demanded an explanation from the athlete. A brawl broke out between them, as a result of which the musician received a broken nose and was forced to seek medical help.
Perhaps the story would not have continued, if not for the further actions of Turan. He came to the hospital to Shakhin to apologize to him. According to the footballer, he did not know that the woman is his wife. He brought a weapon with him and invited the musician to shoot him as retribution.
Having received a reasonable refusal, the midfielder was about to leave, but suddenly opened fire on the floor, as a dispute arose between the men again. None of those present were injured.
Later, during the investigation, it turned out that Turan did not have permission to carry weapons.
“Istanbul Bashaksehir” fined his player € 370 thousand, however, the criminal case against him threatened with a more severe punishment. Turan was accused of shooting, illegal possession of weapons, assault, as well as sexual harassment. Shakhin’s side demanded that he be sentenced to 12.5 years in prison, but subsequently the last charge was dropped.
The midfielder did not personally attend the final hearing. The sentence is conditional and will come into force if the player commits a new crime within five years.
Commenting on the court decision, he emphasized that he did not agree with him, and accused Shakhin of defamation. According to him, a large number of people who confirmed his innocence became witnesses to the incidents.
“I learned a lesson from these events. My main goal is to make my family, my beloved wife, my club and my family proud of me, ”Turan wrote in an appeal to fans published on his Instagram page.
In turn, Shahin noted that Turan never apologized to him. In addition, he emphasized that he considers the court decision is not strict enough, since, in fact, the player will not suffer any punishment.
Explosive nature
Turan is famous for its ambiguous behavior not only outside the field, but also during matches. So, in 2015, as a player in Madrid, “Atletico”, he threw the boot into the side referee during the quarterfinal match of the Spanish Cup. Fortunately for the judge, the “shell” did not achieve its goal, however, this did not save the midfielder from disqualification. The incident was followed by a quarrel with head coach Diego Simeone. It was reported that it was she who caused the football player to leave the team in the summer of that year.
In 2017, Turan announced the completion of a career in the national team, for which he spent 100 matches. The reason for this decision was the scandal that arose on the eve of one of the friendlies, in which Turkey met with Macedonia. The football player had a conflict with the journalist Bilyal Meshe. First, the player yelled at a press representative, and then grabbed him by the throat. Partners had to pull them away. As a result, the midfielder was suspended from participation in the training camp, and then completely left the team.
In May last year, Turan received a 16-match suspension, being a player of Istanbul Bashaksehir. This time, the line judge again suffered from his hands. In the 94th minute of the match with Sivasspor, in the opinion of Turan, no violation was recorded by the opponent. This angered the midfielder so much that he pushed the referee with force.
