Dutch baseball players have the group win at the European Championships in Germany up for grabs. The team of coach Evert-Jan 't Hoen won on Wednesday 13-4 against Israel.
It was the first defeat for Israel at the European Championship. The Orange, already certain of a place in the last eight, was more surprisingly lost to the Czech Republic, but that defeat can remain without consequences.
If the Netherlands, which is officially called Team Kingdom of the Netherlands at the European Championship, also wins the remainder of the broken-off game against Great Britain later on Wednesday, it will go to the quarter-finals as a group winner. That match is resumed with a 10-2 lead.
Ademar Rifaela was of great value to the titleholder, hitting two homeruns. The leftfielder accounted for a total of five runs batted in. Kalian Sams and Hendrik Clementina also hit the ball into the fences.
If Great Britain is also beaten, the Orange team will play against Belgium on Friday, the number four in group B. In the event of a win, the team will have earned a ticket for the Olympic qualifying tournament.
The tournament, which will be held in Italy from 18 to 22 September, will involve one ticket for next year's Games in Tokyo.
