Spanish tennis player Rafael Nadal tightened the noose on Serb Novak Djokovic in the world rankings of tennis professionals, and narrowed the gap with him in the new version of the rankings released on Monday by the World Association of Game Professionals.

Nadal benefited a lot from his victory in the US Open (Flushing Meadows) by beating Russian teenager Daniel Medvedev on Sunday in the final of the championship, and narrowed the gap with world number one Djokovic.

Nadal raised his tally to 9,225 points from 9,865 points to leaders Djokovic, narrowing the gap to 640 points after Nadal won his nineteenth title in the "Grand Slam" Grand Slam.

Djokovic has pulled out of Flushing Meadows' quarter-finals in the last few days because of injury.

Roger Federer, who lost in the quarter-finals, remained in third place with 7,130 points.

Russia's Medvedev moved up one place to fourth, taking his tally to 5235 points, after reaching the final of a grand slam for the first time in his career, while Austrian Dominic Thim slipped to fifth place with 4575 points.

Italy's Matteo Bertini jumped 12 places to 13th in the standings after reaching the Golden Square in Flushing Meadows.

German Alexander Zverev maintained his sixth place with 4095 points and exchanged Greek Stefanos Tsitsipas and Japanese Ki Nishikori positions in the rankings, where the Greek player to the seventh place with 3420 points against 3375 points for Nishikori, which fell to eighth.

Russian Karen Khashanov (2810 points) and Spain's Roberto Bautista Agut (2575 points) maintained their ninth and tenth places respectively.
