Egan Bernal is still not sure about participating in the World Cycling Championships later this month. The Colombian contradicts that he will start in Yorkshire anyway.
The winner of the Tour de France would have said on Tuesday that he is part of the Colombian World Cup selection, but according to the Team INEOS rider there is no certainty yet. The selection will only be announced after the Vuelta.
"I want to make it clear that it is absolutely not certain that I will ride the World Cup this year," writes 22-year-old Bernal on Twitter on Wednesday.
"I am preparing in Colombia for the final weeks of the season, but if I feel that I cannot represent my country in the best way possible at the World Cup, I would like to give the opportunity to someone else."
Bernal never rode a World Championship on the road
Bernal never rode a World Championship on the road, so if he appeared at the start in Great Britain that is his debut. He did participate as a junior in the World Mountain Bike Championship, on which he won silver in 2014 and 2015 bronze.
He was crowned the youngest post-war winner of the Tour de France last month. He referred his teammate and title defender Geraint Thomas to second place. Steven Kruijswijk became third.
The world title fight in Great Britain starts on Sunday, September 22 and ends one week later with the road race with the pros.
