It became an introduction with the message for the sixth-seeded Swedish ladies when the team championship in table tennis was initiated on behalf of Sweden today in Nantes. 3-0 in matches against 21st-seeded Turkey and fine Swedish play both good as the championship continues.

Linda Bergström gave the lead to Sweden

First out was Linda Bergström from Ängby SK who was pitted against Sibel Altinkaya. Bergström started well and took the first two sets and also had the position to decide the match in his own serve in position 9-9 in the third set. But Altinkaya instead took two quick points and reduced the match. In the fourth, it was clear that Bergström was the better player and after acquiring six match balls she was also able to take home the match with a distinct forehand mash.

After Matilda Ekholm dropped the first set against Gul Pembe Özkaya, Ekholm was able to take home three straight and thus extinguish Sweden's lead.

The third match, perhaps the most even on the paper, was between Christina Källberg and only sixteen-year-old Özge Yilmaz. It also became an exciting deal where the Turkish took the lead by 11-4 but Källberg played himself and took home both the second and third sets. After Yilmaz took the fourth set by 12-10, a fifth decision was needed in the match. Once there, Källberg showed a nice cold and was able to take home the match with 11-6.

The Swedish men will start their championship against Hungary at 16:00 this afternoon.
