Most people had expected a simple and clear Swedish victory, when the World Cup bronze team started the qualification for the European Championship 2021 in meeting 93-ranked Latvia.

And it looked good. Sweden immediately parked on the Latvian half, and looked completely superior.

But after a short quarter, the shock came. A long ball was nicked to Karlina Miksone who put 1-0 to Latvia, on the team's first attack.

But Sweden continued as they had begun. And after just over half an hour the dividend finally came. Linda Sembrant reached the top corner from Kosovare Asllani, and after some confusion, the referee approved the goal, and Sweden had acknowledged.

And it would continue in a similar way. Barely five minutes into the second half, Asllani hit a new corner, and this time Sembrant's center-back colleague Amanda Ilestedt reached the top and scored 2-1.

A while later, the newly-exchanged Madelen Janogy was dropped, after which Caroline Seger stepped forward and safely put 3-1.

Self-sufficiency ended

Before the match was over, Sweden also scored 4-1, and this time on the corner. But this time, the Latvian goalkeeper himself boxed into Asllani's corner.

Sweden's next European qualifying match will be played on October 4 against Hungary.
