Felix Sanchez has been named coach of the Qatari Football Federation (QFF) on Wednesday.

In a statement, the federation said its executive office had decided to appoint Sanchez "as head of the technical team of the Olympic team in the coming period, to succeed his compatriot Albert Fernandez, with Sanchez retaining his position as technical director of the first national team", which he has held since July 2017.

He explained that the decision comes "ahead of the important entitlement accepted by Annabi Olympic, which is the finals of the Asian Under-23 Cup to be held in Thailand early next year, and qualify for the football competition at the Olympic Games to be hosted by Tokyo in the summer of 2020."

The federation put this step in the framework of "taking advantage of its great experience with national teams, especially for the age groups, and the successes achieved."

Sanchez, 43, has previously coached the Qatari Olympic team in a series of tasks that allowed him to oversee the different age groups, from the youth team that won him the 2014 Asian Cup (under 19 years), and the team under 23 years (Olympic), which led him to Third place in the continental championship in 2018.

His most remarkable achievement remains the leadership of Annabi for the first time in his history to the title of the 2019 Asian Cup finals hosted by the United Arab Emirates between January 5 and February 1 of the same year.

The Qatari federation announced in May the extension of Sanchez's contract with the national team until the World Cup 2022 hosted by Qatar.
